Embedded Systems and Communication Electronics
Profile and Objective
The Internet of Things (IoT) is growing in significance. Wired and wireless networking of embedded systems and their interconnection as Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) play an increasingly important role in IoT. The laboratory of Embedded Systems and Communication Electronics is dedicatedly working on future oriented developments in the following areas.
- Embedded Internet and Embedded Webserver
- Communications Standards such as IEEE802.15.4/ZigBee/6LoWPAN, TLS, Bluetooth/Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Wired and Wireless M-Bus, Wireless HART, GPRS/UMTS/LTE and many more
- Algorithm and protocol development for optimized connectivity, i.e. for energy efficiency, real time capability, routing, adaptation (portability), safety, and security
- Hardware and software architectures for efficient implementation of embedded networking nodes
Research Projects
The laboratory is part of the Institute of Reliable Embedded Systems and Communication Electronics (ivESK): https://ivesk.hs-offenburg.de
Equipment
The laboratory has modern equipment reaching from networked workstations and servers to measurement electronics such as function generators, oscilloscopes and signal analyzers. Various hardware development boards including microcontrollers, radio transceivers and communication units are available.
In addition to common software development tools, such as Eclipse, Git and Redmine, fully licensed IAR Embedded Workbench, Keil µVision4, Perytons Network Sniffer and OPNET Network Simulator are provided by the laboratory.
A unique feature of the laboratory is the fully automated physical testbed for spatially distributed radio nodes.
Internships and Exercises
In addition to the “Bus Systems and Interfaces” (E+I Bachelor students) and “Embedded and Industrial Networking” (E+I Master students) laboratory exercises, project works (EI-14) and multiple thesis and internships have been completed and continue to take place.
Current offerings can be found in the Moodle course “Bachelor-/Masterarbeiten und Praktika Prof. Sikora” (https://elearning.hs-offenburg.de/moodle/course/view.php?id=1632).
