Communications Engineering

Profile and objectives

Communications engineering covers the broad, highly interesting field of the transmission of speech, images, texts, music and data by electronic means. The information and communication society in which we live can only exist and develop on the basis of the most modern technologies for transmitting such information via cable, fibre, air or satellite. Today we talk about radio, television, telephone, telefax, mobile radio, local computer networks, Internet etc..

Our explosive growing demand for these and in the future completely new possibilities requires ever faster and more powerful devices and creative ideas. Therefore, various experiments under professional supervision impart the basic knowledge of communications engineering, in particular of communications transmission.

Equipment

  • function generators
  • Digital Oscilloscopes with FFT Analysis
  • Multimeter with frequency counter
  • Test setups for the individual topics (in-house developments)
  • everything for 6 simultaneous laboratory groups

Internships and Tutorials

Board circuits for limiter, amplifier and oscillator circuits are set up in very small groups and their parameters are measured. In practical tests, these almost playfully tap into the circuit technology knowledge that is particularly important for the telecommunications technology engineer.

Understanding message transmission naturally also includes descriptive and extensive experiments on amplitude and frequency modulation.

The communications engineering laboratory also enables creative experiments, calculations and measurements, which can be carried out, for example, during student research projects and theses.

Further information

Participation in this laboratory is recommended in the same semester as the Lecture Communications Engineering, because the lecture conveys the necessary previous knowledge in temporal coordination and forms together with the laboratory, the Fundamentals of Communications Engineering module.
